POST PRODUCTION - MUSIC

Writer's picture: Stanley BrabazonStanley Brabazon

Early on in the planning process, we made a group decision to compose an original score for the music in our opening. Everything was written and recorded in the Logic Pro X.

The most important of composing the piece was to be able to create a certain mood that would work in tandem with the footage we had recorded. It couldn't be too flashy and take away from the narrative of the opening, but it didn't have to add to the tension of the scene.

The score is in the key of D minor, which is important as the minor scale allows for more menacing melodies and harmonies. We wanted it to have a modern twist as well, so synthesisers were used in the place of instruments typical of the thriller genre (eg. violins, violas, piano, etc.). Numerous drum and percussion samples were used as well.

To create a rough, unsettling tone on the instruments, many effects plug-ins, such as distortion and delay, were placed on the individual instrument tracks. I also automated the volume of some of the tracks to crescendo in time with the edited footage.

Finally I adjusted the EQ of all the tracks in the mixing process so that the lower bass frequencies could stand out without interfering/clashing with the higher treble frequencies.
